Languages, both written and spoken, serve as powerful tools that enable us to describe and comprehend the complexities of the world. They facilitate communication, understanding, and the sharing of ideas. However, despite their strengths, languages can also be constraining, offering limited perspectives and imposing restrictions on our understanding.
In my thesis and exploration, I delved into the intricate relationship between languages and ourselves, exploring their boundaries and seeking alternative ways of perceiving them. I recognized that languages are not fixed entities; they are dynamic and continually evolving. Through my research, I uncovered how the introduction of new words expands our understanding of reality and shapes our linguistic landscapes.
By venturing into new modes of communication, such as learning unfamiliar languages or challenging established linguistic systems, I discovered how languages influence our thought processes and shape our worldview. This awareness prompted me to explore unconventional approaches, including breaking linguistic rules, intervening in existing systems, and even designing constructed languages. Drawing inspiration from speculative design, I applied a fresh perspective to uncover further questions and problems, shedding light on different facets of our linguistic experiences.
In addition to my written thesis, I transformed my research into a captivating pop-up book and undertook various projects to engage with the theme of language exploration. Through this multidimensional approach, I aimed to invite others to reflect on the intricate interplay between languages and our perception of the world.
